In the aftermath, we are because they were.

R.J. Heller
About This Quote

The word aftermath has a connotation of something bad following something good. However, the word aftermath also means to be a result of something else. In fact, the word aftermath can mean to be a result of anything at all. The aftermath of the Civil War was called Reconstruction.

Reconstruction meant rebuilding after the war, or more specifically, after the defeat of the Confederacy. It also meant being a result of the war.
